What’s new in the smartphone world at the beginning of 2013?

With CES 2013 (Consumer Electronics Show) taking place in a week, in Las Vegas, on 7 January 2013, and the Mobile World Congress happening in Barcelona between 25th Feb 2013 – 28th Feb 2013, we are expecting the first quarter of 2013 to be big storm of news and announcements.
Many companies are discreet regarding their plans for CES and traditionally this massive trade show is the US carriers preferred smartphone launching place. Also global smartphone producers reveal some guideline directions for the new year and gain attention before launching their flagships and top quality and design innovation products latter in February, on Mobile World Congress. Historically not many products that were launched at CES succeeded to stay in the spotlight and make some real impact in the mobile world industry as the year progressed. This happened in the past with Nokia Lumia 900 for AT&T, Sony Xperia S, and Atrix 4G.

But leaving the past behind here is our forecast on what is going to come with CES:

  • As we first linked CES to US carriers will talk on specific new carriers phones from AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon. So far we can expect to see the new “Pantech” model on AT&T, considering the last year movement with the “Burst”. Other potential devices may show up but the networks are staying very quiet about it.

  • Quite possible the “ Grand S” device featuring a 5-inch FHD (1080p) will be announced by ZTE on January 8th. It is said to be the world’s thinnest 5-inch phone.

  • Huawei’s first-ever Windows Phone, the Ascend W1 was confirmed to be introduced at CES as a 5-inch FHD smartphone device. Also Huawei will bring its beasty device called the Ascend Mate, a 6.1-inch 1080p Android phone.

  • Sony has hinted us before with the leaked press shots on their pair of Android phones “Xperia Z” (Odin) and” Xperia ZL” (Yuga). These devices are expected to have 5-inch 1080p displays and quad-core processors and a 13MP Exmor RS sensor, also found on “Oppo Find5” at least for one of them.

Regarding the plans of mobile phone big companies, it seems CES will be a little too quiet show on this sector.

HTC usually waits MWC to unveil its flagships, so  we are still waiting for the M7. Samsung has made public that no new significant releases will be made at the show while Nokia and Motorola it’s remaining silent regarding their smartphone division presence at CES. Still, it will be nice to come face to face with the Nokia demo of Windows Phone 7.8 or other small surprises, from Samsung with Galaxy Grand for example.

And we have a surprise that came just today when LG teased its appearance at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas with a short and not so explicit movie. Rummors says we’ll see a device sililar to Optimus G flagship speculated to have a 1080p screen (probably around 5″), quad-core 2.0 or 2.5 GHz Krait processor, Adreno 320 and  2 gigs of RAM minimum.

Stay close till the next article when we’ll see what to expect from Mobile World Congress and the smartphone world in 2013.
